I've experienced the engineering career ladder at both small and large companies, as well as from both the hiring manager's and engineer's perspective. I've learned what skills are necessary for progression no matter where you are, and how expectations of you scale with the size and age of the organization. In recent years, I've mentored dozens of staff+ engineers, as well as tech leads/tech lead managers, to help people understand what's ahead of them and how they can advocate for themselves. Doing so has shown me that there are very common misconceptions and unknowns about a long term technical career, so I'm excited to mentor participants in this Staff+? What Now??
