I've managed ICs and managers at fast-growing companies (Uber, Sonder). I've found that feedback and retrospectives are the most effective ways to accelerate the growth of individuals and teams, but they take hard work and intention. Giving and receiving feedback is challenging, and retrospectives are valuable, but often produce a long laundry list of tasks that remain on the team's backlog for weeks. Managers have an important role to play in creating a feedback culture. With practice, intention, and the willingness to iterate on processes, your team can have a feedback culture and experience tremendous growth.
