Gerhard Esterhuizen

Hi folks! My name is Gerhard Esterhuizen and I am currently VP Engineering at Rescale, where I lead our Engineering team. I got into Software Engineering more than 20 years ago, in South Africa, initially specializing in signal processing and eventually large-scale distributed systems. Most of this was in the context of fast-moving technology companies, although I spent a little bit of time in “corporate”. In 2014, I was fortunate to move to the Bay Area to join Cloudflare as their first EM. After building out six product and infrastructure Engineering teams there, I joined Segment where I was responsible for a number of teams that owned new and existing core product features. Building a well-functioning Engineering organization is a bit like designing a complex, semi-stochastic distributed system :) I believe that great managers set their teams up for scale by driving clarity, removing dependencies, empowering individuals and holding everyone to a high bar. I’m excited about Plato for the opportunity to contribute to the development of our next generation of Engineer leaders. Looking forward to meeting you!
