Hi! I am a seasoned entrepreneur (6+ years) and manager (10+ years) with experience in both the tech and biotech industries. I am the Co-Founder and CTO of Phase Genomics, where we use machine learning to analyze genetic data to better understand cancer, infectious disease, and more, and previously was a Program (aka Product) Manager and PM Lead at Microsoft working on Office. I have dealt with a wide variety of management issues over the years, including hiring, fostering team culture, designing organizations, forming and driving strategy, (unfortunately) firing/managing people out, and lots more. I've been a successful IC, first-level manager of a small team, and a manager-of-managers. A few qualities I stress in any organization: (1) encouraging good local decision making, (2) delegating responsibilities not tasks, and (3) unleashing smart people on hard problems. My background is in CS, with biotech, business, management, and startup learning on the job. I'm on PlatoHQ because I have benefitted tremendously from the mentors who've helped me over the years, and I am excited for the opportunity to pay it forward to the next generation of leaders.

Experience

Co-Founder & Chief Technology Officer

Phase Genomics

Nov 2015 - current

I am one of the founders and the CTO of Phase Genomics. In this role, I have helped grow the company from 2 people to 25 people, building several teams within the company and helping set overall strategy and culture. I have been key to fundraising, product strategy, implementation, customer and partner relations, business development, and most other aspects of running the company. Like most entrepreneurs, you name it, I've either done it, or am pretty sure I can figure it out.

Senior Program Manager Lead/Senior PM/PM2/PM1

Microsoft

Aug 2007 - Nov 2015

I began my career at Microsoft and worked in various Program Management (equivalent to Product Management at most tech companies) roles, steadily being promoted to managing my own team of PMs. The core skillset for these roles was understanding the customer and their needs, forming requirements, designing products, building consensus for my designs, and leading the implementation of my products/features. As a manager, I was also responsible for developing my team, hiring, representing my reports in performance review discussions, fostering good culture, and contributing to strategic product discussions.
