I have not ever been paid to be a Manager, so I have always been a leader without direct authority. My leadership style is a mix of "lead by example" and "alignment via sharing & discussing primary source information". I also believe that one's leadership potential is strongly tied to one's ability to have hard conversations in a lightweight manner.
