I have been developing software for over 4 decades, creating hardware and software products and managing development teams. Over these years I have worked at several startup companies, all of which are still making and delivering products – the most notable ones are Pixar, Broderbund Software, and Gracenote. I co-authored the book "Managing the Unmanageable: Rules, Tools, and Insights for Managing Software People and Teams", whose 2nd edition was published by Addison Wesley/Pearson in 2020. This book distills the over 70 years of combined experience of my co-author and I, and presents real world guidance to anyone who wants to be a successful manager and leader. My experience includes directing R&D teams around the world and managing multidisciplinary teams working 24/7 to deliver successful products. With experience in selecting, establishing, and managing offshore development organizations in India, Russia, China, South Korea, Japan, and Canada I bring insight into the challenges of managing software development using diverse staff and teams that are hours and oceans apart. Today I have my own company that develops and distributes iOS and Android mobile, Mac and Windows applications, plus consult with a variety of companies and organizations regarding best software development practices and improving the leadership and management of software people and teams.
